Hello readers, welcome back to another session of the mental training diaries blog. In this post, you will be reading about grit and all that it entails. Grit is a term that has gained a lot of attention in recent years, particularly in the context of achievement and success. While intelligence, talent, and skill are all important, grit is what sets successful people apart from the rest. Grit is the ability to persevere in the face of adversity, to maintain focus and passion despite obstacles and setbacks. In her book "Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance," psychologist Angela Duckworth defines grit as a combination of perseverance and passion for long-term goals. According to Duckworth, grit is essential for achieving success in any area of life, from sports and academia to business and personal relationships. There is power in having grit and it is an important skill to develop.

Here are some key strategies to developing grit:

1. Set clear goals

Gritty individuals have a clear sense of what they want to achieve and why. They set long-term goals and break them down into smaller, manageable steps.

2. Embrace challenge

Gritty individuals view challenges as opportunities for growth and learning, rather than obstacles to be avoided. They welcome new experiences and are willing to take risks.

3. Cultivate a growth mindset

A growth mindset is the belief that one's abilities can be developed through hard work and dedication. Gritty individuals believe that they can improve their skills and abilities with effort and practice.

4. Practice self-discipline

Gritty individuals are able to stay focused on their goals and resist distractions. They develop routines and habits that support their long-term goals.

5. Build a support system

Gritty individuals surround themselves with people who support and encourage them. They seek out mentors and role models who can provide guidance and advice.

6. Maintain perspective

Gritty individuals understand that setbacks and failures are a natural part of the learning process. They use these experiences as opportunities to learn and grow, rather than giving up or becoming discouraged.

Developing grit takes time and effort, but the rewards are worth it. Whether you're working towards a personal or professional goal, cultivating grit will help you stay focused, overcome obstacles, and achieve success.

While we are talking about grit and perseverance, there are also times when the best idea is to throw in the towel. Ever see some people where they’re holding onto something for entirely too long and bad pieces of duct tape is what is holding things together? There are often signs when it is okay to throw the towel in but only do this when you've exhausted every option. When every aspect of your life is being affected negatively or you can’t even see or visualize a positive outcome. Nevertheless, with the majority of people quitting things prematurely, it is in some people’s best interest if they throw in the towel and focus on something else. However, the only person who is able to truly decide that is you. The person who benefits from being gritty is you and at the same time the person who benefits from knowing when to throw in the towel is also you.

The choice is yours!

Until Next Time,

E. Ibadin
